On 11 December, SIPRI’s Dr Florian Krampe participated at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 in Madrid and engaged in the GCCA+ (Global Climate Change Alliance Plus) session on ‘’. Dr Krampe held a presentation based on the findings from two recent SIPRI publications, the Policy Paper Climate-related security risks and peacebuilding in Somalia and the Policy Brief Climate change, peacebuilding and sustaining peace. The event highlighted a growing interest in the topic of climate-related security risks.
On 4-5 December, prior to COP25, Dr Krampe also presented SIPRI’s research on climate security at a joint workshop in Brussels hosted by the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the European Union. The workshop convened regional and sub-regional organisations engaging on mediation and conflict prevention discussing, among others, the interface between climate change, peace and security.
